Bordertown

Bordertown, by Carl Cacho
The smoke rolls in from Mexico
Where the fires burn sweet and slow
Must seem like hell down there below
Below this bordertown
The dust swirls up around my feet
The streets are silent in the heat
But there’s a steady, strong heartbeat
To this bordertown
I’m just a rambler passing through
But towns like this are nothing new
I’m from East, by the endless blue
Waiting for the sound of a train rolling down the track
The ticket in my hand, the sun beating on my back
Where lazy boys drink lone star beer
And feign machismo to hide their fear
That they’ve been marked like branded steer
Marked by this bordertown
Like snakes by day they hang around
But at night they’ll be southland bound
To where that easy love is found
South of this bordertown
I know that longing and the strain
As muscles work to break the chain
But freedom’s difficult to gain
Waiting for the sound of a train rolling down the tracks
The ticket in my hand, the sun beating on my back
The tired sun starts sinking slow
I hear that lonesome whistle blow
My signal that it’s time to go
Go from this bordertown
I grab my bag and my guitar
Climb aboard the third class car
My cigarette a shooting star
Across this bordertown
I love the sound of a train rolling down the track
The town that lies ahead, the never looking back

Slip It Into Drive

Slip It Into Drive by Carl Cacho
The money’s gone
That we saved last year
We spent the last of it
On birth control and beer
And February was the saddest story told
When you got this Spanish blood
That just can’t take the cold
We came up North
With just our knapsacks and our thumbs
You know I loved you best
When we were always on the run
You’ve got to slip it into drive,
Take it out of park
If you need a jump
I’ll be your spark
‘Cause I ain’t afraid of the highway signs
That old road, she’s a friend of mine
She’s a friend of mine
Now if I’m not moving
I feel I’m wasting time
I told you when we met
I was born the restless kind
I’ll hock my CD player
And my Grandpa’s ring
On the way downtown I’ll teach you
A travelling song to sing
Then we’ll fill the tank
With the credit card
Then hitch our wagon
To the nearest runaway star
We can find some blues in Memphis
Some Dixieland in New Orleans
San Antoine is like a sweet kiss
To anyone that’s running free
So lock the door
On the Johnson’s shack
I called them up and asked
For our last month’s rent back
And give sad Josephine
Our last goodbye
We’re leaving when the sun comes up
To kick the moon out of the sky

Save Me A Seat

Save Me A Seat - by Carl Cacho
You were just another child
On God’s highway
Trying to be true
In this troubled world of sin
Rambling down the road
Before my day
I’ll tell you brother
I know the places that you’ve been
So up in heaven
Save me a seat at the bar
You bring your mandolin
And I’ll bring my guitar
We’ll sing gospel
Until they close that place down
Until that Blue Kentucky Moon
Comes back around
When I was just a girl
I heard the echo of your footsteps
I listened to your songs
‘Cause my eyes were full of doubt
And I never did forget
When I was searching for salvation
Sometimes being lost is what living’s all about
Above the Blue Ridge Mountains
Your voice is calling like the wind
Whispering through the pines
Like a long lost friend
Just like you
I’ve been cursed to roam
But all stray children
They get called back home

The Devil In Me

|

The Devil In Me – Carl Cacho-Negrete
I won’t know forgiveness
In this life at all
All I’ve found is trouble
Since I learned to crawl
I need an exorcism to set me free
I was born
With the Devil in me
The Devil in Me
The Devil in Me
Seems like all I’ve got
Is the Devil in me
When I was a little boy
I couldn’t do no right
Every rule there was
I’d try and fight
Don’t know how many times
I was on my father’s knee
As he took the belt
To the Devil in me
Some women give it all
If you treat them nice
And it’s got me in trouble
Once or twice
I wear this band of gold
For everyone to see
But it don’t mean much
To the devil in me

That Belongs To You

That Belongs To You – Carl Cacho-Negrete
I left the town that I was born in
I left my room above the mill
I left my clothes to the orphans
I left my shadow to the hills
I left the red moon burning
I left the black night turning blue
I left it all, with this heart
That belongs to you
That belongs to you
I took the road where the diesels whine
I took my battered traveling case
I took the dawn’s light as a good sign
I took the old man’s younger face
I took my hope from the morning
I took the only name I knew
I took it all, with this heart
That belongs to you
That belongs to you
I searched from Port Jeff to Monterey
I searched the desert cottonwood
I searched until I faded away
Like any pilgrim would
You’ll find me dancing in the river
You’ll find me whistling through the trees
You’ll find me every time you shiver
You’ll find me laughing with the breeze
You’ll find me in a dream forgotten
You’ll find me singing in the pew
You’ll find me, with this heart
That belongs to you
That belongs to you

Home Is Where They Have To Let You In - Carl Cacho-Negrete
Another steamy August night
Another heated family fight
I slammed out the door yelling a curse
Down the street my father hollard
You won't get far on that twenty dollars
That you stole from your mothers purse
I had just turned fifteen
Didn't know the world turns mean
When you try to take it on alone
Three days on the streets I tried
Then picked up all my busted pride
Swallowed it all the way back home
My father sweeping off the front steps
Smiled and asked me how I had been
Then he didn't say nothing more
He just opened up the door
home is where they have to let you in
Now I'm the one who pays the rent
I share my dark apartment
With a mutt I rescued from the pound
He doesn't have his pedigree
He doesn't want too much from me
He's the best friend that I've ever found
We both sleep throughout the day
At night we go our seperate ways
Meet up when the morning's back again
Sometimes I'm back from the bar
Lonesome as the old north star
Other times I'm bringing back a friend
He comes back stinking like the alley
The way a wino stinks of gin
But he's learned his lesson well
No matter how you smell
Home is where they have to let you in
Now I don't want no big brass bands
No people crying in their hands
When it finally comes my time to die
Just forgive my IOU's
And sing for me my unplayed blues
As my soul lifts into the sky
Where Saint Peter will be waiting
To slowly count on up all my sins
He'll say these don't mean a thing
And hand me angel wings
Home is where they have to let you in

The Bluest Of Things

|

The Bluest Of Things by Carl Cacho
There’s blue that’s as sweet as my sister’s eyes
There’s blue that’s as free as the wide-open sky
There’s blue deep as the ocean where the tall ships fly
There’s blue that’s as lonesome as a coyote’s cry
There’s blue that’s as pure as a church bell’s ring
But the blue in my heart is the bluest of things
There’s blue that’s as dark as the moon going down
There’s blue that’s as hard as the steel rails through town
There’s blue soft as the ashes of the old house burned down
There’s blue that’s as steady as the world spinning round
There’s blue that’s as bright as a new diamond ring
But the blue in my heart is the bluest of things
There’s blue that’s as long as the path that you choose
There’s blue that’s as gone as the true love you lose
There’s blue sad as the mud on a gravedigger’s shoes
There’s blue that’s as desperate as a man that’s accused
There’s blue that’s as rough as the bad news you bring
But the blue in my heart is the bluest of things

One Step Too Far

|

One Step Too Far – Carl Cacho-Negrete
The lights were dim
The band was loud
We yelled for drinks
Above the crowd
We didn’t have
Any secrets then
Like we do now
I held your hand
There in the bar
Kissed your mouth
Out by the car
We both knew then
It was a step too far
One step too far
Put the lid back on that jar
That night in the parking lot
We took a step too far
I know there ain’t no way no how
You would ever want to break your vow
But I wonder if you want me
The way I want you now
But I think of you
As the day unfurls
When night shines like
A string of pearls
Leaving me to dream about
Your soft red curls
I got a fire
In my soul
Where my demons
Shovel coal
Making sure that my heart don’t freeze
Freeze like the old south pole
I can’t help but
Fan that flame
Every time that
I say your name
‘Til it goes on and fills my head
And makes me blush with shame

Looking for Your Heart

Looking For Your Heart by Carl Cacho-Negrete
The rain rusted the road signs
The wooden bridge can’t be crossed
The lines on the map mislead me
But I won’t admit I’m lost
There’s more than one destination
I couldn’t choose from the start
And I know wherever I go
I’ll be looking for your heart
I tried to follow the footsteps
Of those who had been there before
I want what they wanted
Only I want it more
All the trains at the station
Cry when they depart
And I know wherever they go
They’ll be looking for your heart
I stop to rest in a diner
Where the menus smell like smoke
The same song plays over and over
Because the jukebox broke
The waitress asks what I’m wanting
I don’t know where to start
When I know that wherever I go
I’ll be looking for your heart

Too Hot To Touch

|

Too Hot to Touch by Carl Cacho-Negrete
It was the start of sixth grade
September of 79
We were over Glen’s house I think
Though it could have been mine
The Sky was orange and hot
The leaves were brown and dry
I lit a match, stood back
And like a fool I let it fly
When the fire trucks came screaming we ran like hell
I made Glen promise that he would never tell (and he never)
Some Things You Do
You Don’t Think about too much
Till they’re right in front of you
And they’re too hot to touch
I was waiting tables at a bar on Salisbury beach
I had a crush on the owner’s daughter
Though she thought she was out of my reach
I wrote her a hundred songs
Sang them for her one by one
Till she agreed to meet me
At closing time when my work was done
She walked into the dining room
Wearing nothing but the moonlight
We settled down to learn about love
Till her father came in and lit up the night
You can paint over your mistakes
Glue together a heart that breaks
These are lessons that I’ve learned
Like don’t handle a loaded gun
Or stare into the Texas Sun
Still you wind up getting burned, burned, burned

Stay With Me Tonight

Stay With Me Tonight – by Carl Cacho-Negrete/Kevin So
Close your eyes, say goodnight
My arm around you, don’t it feel all right
Texas moon, prairie sky
Ask if you want me
Darling don’t you lie
The summer wind it sighs
Soft as a lullaby
That the moon sings for your troubled mind
Darling stay with me tonight
I don’t know what we’ll find
We’ll take this loving
One dance at a time
Come lay down, go to sleep
I won’t ask you for
A promise you can’t keep
Close your eyes, say goodnight
And I will bring you
All the mornings’ light
